While you might not traditionally think of Tulsa, Oklahoma (where Route 66 is held) as an ideal race destination, think again! The Route 66 Marathon is a world class event featuring some of the most highly awarded medals in the country, a challenging course that showcases the best of Tulsa’s beautiful neighborhoods and city center, and the distinction of hosting the world’s shortest ultramarathon! Take the Center of the Universe detour during the full marathon for an extra 0.3 miles and receive a commemorative coin and a beer for your trouble, plus the bragging rights of completing an ultramarathon. If you’re a member of the Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics, or 50 States Marathon Club, look forward to specially designed medals in your club’s colors as well as the full VIP treatment, complete with club tents at the start and finish, members-only porta potties, food, drinks, and more! You’ll even get a complimentary professional group photo before the race start that you can download for free. No race rolls out the red carpet for these groups quite like Route 66! If you’ve got extra time while you’re visiting Oklahoma, consider a walking tour of downtown Tulsa. Tulsa’s downtown began to boom with oil money in the Roaring Twenties, just as the Art Deco movement was hitting its stride. The city has more examples of this classic architectural style than almost any in the country and features buildings designed by architectural legends such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Barry Byrne, and Bruce Goff. There are also plenty of fun sites to be seen along historic Route 66, where you can visit a giant blue whale and tons of other quirky landmarks that are throwbacks to the 1950s era. Music buffs shouldn’t miss the brand new Woody Guthrie Center for the Arts, conveniently located near the finish line of the marathon!
