It may lack some of the A-list glamour of its Film counterpart but the Biennale of Architecture held every two years in Venice is a force to be reckoned with. This year is no exception as the first woman ever to curate the exhibition, Kazuyo Sejima, renowned Japanese architect and Director of the 2010 edition, has handpicked a selection of fresh new talents, away from the spotlights that may surround some of the usual megastars. She chose to call it People Meet in Architecture: "The idea is to help people relate to architecture, to help architecture relate to people, and to help people relate to themselves". While the world is still discovering the enchanting architectural maze thought up by Sejima, the opening ceremony has already honoured some of the more established names in the field: a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for Dutch legend Rem Koolhaas, and a special commemorative prize for irreverent Japanese Kazuo Shinohara. As for the works presented this year, Best National Participation was awarded to the Kingdom of Bahrain, a country where fast-paced architectural developments have been deemed both humble and compelling. La dodicesima edizione è stata inaugurata a fine agosto e sta già guadagnandosi i titoli dei magazine di tutto il mondo, grazie ad una scelta audace che ha dato spazio a giovani architetti e designer emergenti. Forse le manca un po' del glamour patinato della sua controparte Cinematografica, ma la Biennale d'Architettura che si tiene ogni due anni a Venezia è un evento degno del massimo rispetto e non può passare inosservato. Quest'anno non fa eccezione poiché la prima donna in assoluto a curare la mostra, Kazuyo Sejima, famoso architetto giapponese e Direttore dell'edizione 2010, ha selezionato con cura una serie di nuovi talenti, lontani dalle luci dei riflettori che possono circondare alcuni dei soliti "archistar". Il titolo scelto dalla curatrice per la mostra è "People Meet in Architecture": "L'idea è quella di aiutare le persone a relazionarsi con l'architettura, di aiutare l'architettura a relazionarsi con le persone e di aiutare le persone a relazionarsi con se stesse". Mentre il mondo è ancora impegnato nella scoperta dell'incantevole dedalo architettonico ideato da Sejima, la cerimonia di apertura ha già premiato alcuni tra i nomi più affermati nel campo: Leone d'Oro alla carriera al leggendario architetto olandese Rem Koolhaas e un premio speciale alla memoria a Kazuo Shinohara, irriverente architetto giapponese.
